Indian Domestic Airlines Report Card for May 2016 – 87 lakh passengers take flight


We bring you the “Domestic Airlines Report Card for India” for the month of May, 2016. We take a look at the Number of Passengers carried, Market Share of Each Carrier, Passenger Load Factor and others. (Here is the Report Card for April, 2016)

Passengers Carried and Market Share

The total number of passenger carried during the month of May, 2016 stood at 86.69 lakhs compared to 71.27 lakhs during the same month of the previous year. This resulted in a growth of +21.64% (YoY).

The growth for the period January to May stood at +22.87% (YoY) with 396 lakhs passengers compared to 322 lakhs for the same period of the previous year.

Indigo Airlines  – the market leader with +38.5% market share, carried 33.37 lakh passengers compared to 27.69 lakh passengers during the same month of the previous year, resulting in a growth of +20.5%. This is the highest numbers of passengers carried by any airline in any month over the past 29 months.

Passenger Load Factor

Passenger load factor, or load factor, measures the capacity utilization of public transport services. It is generally used to assess how efficiently a transport provider “fills seats” and generates fare revenue.

While Industry managed an avg. of 84.6% PLF, Spicejet at 93.5% trumped the market leader Indigo at 87.2% PLF also beaten by GoAir at 88.6%.

The overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for the month of May, 2016 has been 0.55%. The Overall cancellation rate is generally influenced by bad weather, unfavorable flight conditions, low visibility, conditions at airports etc.
